Origin
Sikhe Lake (Siikhe Lake) is an artificial natural stream of freshwater lake located in the Ziro Valley of Lower Subansiri district in Arunachal Pradesh. It lies just a few kilometers from Hapoli–Ziro town, easily accessible from the main road and nestled among himalayan mountains covered with pine forests and lush agricultural landscapes. It is the first experimental pivotal water conservation project initiated by then minister Er. Tage Taki. It is on the highest natural plateau of himalayan region in north eastern most corner of India where the sun raises first in the country. Unlike natural lakes formed by glacial or tectonic activity, Siikhe lake was created intentionally as part of a water-conservation and community development project.

📌 Purpose & It’s primary goal includes:
- Water conservation: Augmenting the limited water resources in the Ziro valley, which historically struggled with water scarcity. Now it helps in supporting paddy fields and agricultural needs in the surrounding areas.
- Irrigation and groundwater recharge: It was designed as a multi-purpose project to address water scarcity in the Ziro Valley. Its primary goals include irrigation, fisheries, and domestic water supply.
- Livelihood support: It provide opportunities for fish farming. Fish harvested annually along with paddies and sold locally. It also boos up local fish demand during major events like the Ziro Music Festival.
- The local fishes of ziro valley are very famous and popular those exported offside areas of state and specially to the capital region.
Siikhe Lake has become a model community project blending practical resource management with eco-tourism potential.
Key Note of Project:
- Engineering: The lake was created by developing a 165-meter-long earthen dam across the Siikhe stream, a tributary of the Kley River.
- Funding: The project was built at an estimated cost of ₹450 lakhs under the State Annual Development Agenda (SADA)
- Body: The local communities under supervision of Water Resources Department (WRD), Govt. of A.P converted farmland into this reservoir. It was constructed from september 2017 to january 2019.
🌿 Natural Beauty & Surroundings
The lake’s setting is one of its biggest attractions:
- Scenic landscapes: Siikhe Lake is surrounded by verdant pine forests on the top most natural himalayan plateau, creating a calm, panoramic environment ideal for photography and quiet reflection.
- Greenery and wildlife: the area around the lake hosts rich subtropical vegetation and attracts various migratory and resident bird species, especially in winter. Birdwatchers have recorded more than 28 species on bird-walk events around the lake.
- Wetland ecosystem: its presence has not only improved water conservation but also added to local biodiversity because wetlands at altitude are rare in the region.
🐦 Birdlife and Ecology
Siikhe Lake has become known for its birdlife, particularly during winter months. Migratory waterbirds, including ducks and other waterfowl, use the lake as a resting habitat thanks to its calm waters and surrounding vegetation. Conservation efforts by local communities help protect these birds from hunting and disturbance. In the past, rare sightings such as the Mandarin duck (a species not commonly seen in Northeast India) drew attention from ornithologists and bird lovers, reinforcing the lake’s growing ecological importance.
👀 Tourism & Recreation
While not as crowded as some other tourist sites, Siikhe Lake is a peaceful destination for:
- Boating: Visitors can enjoy motor boating or paddle boating on the calm waters.
- Picnics and walks: the lake area makes a popular picnic spot and offers scenic walking trails along the lakeshore.
- Butterfly park: near the lake, a butterfly park showcases local butterfly and moth species, adding to the nature experience.
Because it is slightly away from the busy parts of Ziro, Sikhe Lake offers a more tranquil experience compared to busier attractions.

🌍 Community Management & Conservation
The lake’s upkeep and surrounding environment are managed by a local society of residents, who organize annual meetings to discuss maintenance, fish harvesting, tourism services, and environmental protection. This community-centered model has helped make Siikhe Lake both an essential resource and a sustainable local attraction.
